Prep & Prep Pro Teams

2024-25 Program information, skiing levels, and registration.

Prep Team

Prep & Prep Pro is one Team

Skiers will learn and improve classic and skate ski techniques while skiing varied terrain. They will also learn training techniques and ski knowledge and care, including kick waxing. Prep skiers are encouraged (but not required) to participate in local races, and the regional Intermountain Youth Camps (Mar 1-2 tbd Bozeman or Jackson 2025). The Prep team is for registrants who have some cross-country ski experience.

Prep Pro must have participated in at least one year of Prep. There is a Friday add-on for skiers interested in racing strategy and refining technique, as well as some practices that join the Comp Team.

First-time younger skiers should register for Chet Hope Youth Ski League or Junior Jets. Beginning skier ages 12 and older should register for Teen Adventure. If you are a first-time Nordic skier, please contact us.

When & Where

Dates

November 7, 2024 to March 5, 2025, starting with dryland exercises then moving to snow when conditions permit.

Days & Time

Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, 4 to 5:30 pm. We expect all skiers to be ready to ski at 4 pm, with their skis waxed and ready to go.

Dryland training is for both conditioning and learning technique. We encourage everyone to participate in Dryland, though you are welcome to join the program after we move onto snow. If you plan to join us after dry-land training, please send in your registration form as soon as possible if you would like to reserve rental gear.

Location

Practice locations will vary depending on snow conditions. We generally meet at the Glacier Nordic Center at Whitefish Lake Golf Course for two days and at the Big Mountain Trails, one day per week. Early and late snow season we are generally at the Big Mountain Trails three days per week, which necessitates kids going straight from school to the Mountain. Dryland locations vary.

Program Costs

Prep – $525

Includes a team hat for first-time registrants.

Prep Pro – $600

Includes 8 Friday sessions and a loaner race suit for the season.

Ski Gear

You will need:

  • Skate skis, skate poles (upper lip height), and combi boots with a cuff or dedicated skate boots. Classic skis, classic poles (mid-shoulder height), and combi or dedicated classic boots. Classic skis should be sized and dedicated to classic skiing with kick wax (no waxless or combis).

  • Basic kick waxes.

Clothing

Dress as you would for winter running.

For early-season dryland training:

  •  Cool-weather running clothes, wool socks and running shoes.

For ski training:

  • A jacket for varying weather conditions, which include rain, wet snow, and cold weather. Please, no parkas—they limit your ability to move!

Gear Rental

Available for the season at a cost of $100 rental for a complete set, or $60 rental for either classic or skate gear. We will begin handing out rental gear in mid-November. If you want to use some of your own gear, please plan for compatibility with our gear, which is NNN.

We encourage skiers to attend as many days as possible, but we realize they may not be able to make all practice days due to other obligations. Like any sport, you will progress faster the more time you put into it!
